How to Create and Configure a Group of Endpoints in Windows Azure Connect
Updated: April 25, 2013
Windows Azure Connect will be retired on 7/3/2013. We recommend that you migrate your Connect services to Windows Azure Virtual Network prior to this date. The Connect service will no longer be operational after 7/3/2013. Please see About Secure Cross-Premises Connectivity for information about secure site-to-site and point-to-site cross-premises communication using Virtual Network. Please refer to Migrating Cloud Services from Windows Azure Connect to Windows Azure Virtual Network for migration information.
After you install the Windows Azure Connect endpoint software on computers or virtual machines (VMs) in your local network, those computers or VMs are called local endpoints. Before you can connect local endpoints to Windows Azure roles, you must place the local endpoints in an endpoint group. Each local endpoint can be a member of only one endpoint group, but one endpoint group can be connected to a second endpoint group (which creates connections to the local endpoints in the second group, but not to the roles in that group). This expands the number of connections that are possible, as described in Use Endpoint Groups to Configure Connectivity in Windows Azure Connect.

| If you have already created an endpoint group and want to modify it, see Additional considerations, later in this topic. |
For an illustration of the Windows Azure Connect interface, see Overview of Windows Azure Connect.
-
Confirm that you have installed the Windows Azure Connect endpoint software on the computers or virtual machines (VMs) in your local network that you want to include in the endpoint group. For information about installing the endpoint software, see How to Install Local Endpoints with Windows Azure Connect.
-
Open the Management Portal for Windows Azure.
-
On the lower left, click Virtual Network.
The Windows Azure Connect interface appears.
-
In the console tree, click the subscription containing the roles that you want to connect local endpoints to. If you are prompted to enable the subscription for Windows Azure Connect, click OK.
-
With the subscription still selected, at the top, click Create Group.
The Create a New Endpoint Group dialog box appears.
-
In Group Name, specify a name that will help you recognize the group when you view it in the interface.
-
Optionally, in Description, specify a description.
-
Under Connect from, use the Add button to browse for and add local endpoints. Click OK.
If you click the Add button under Connect from, but do not see a local endpoint that you expect to see, it might already be assigned to a group. To move an endpoint to a different group or remove it from a group, see the last two items in Additional considerations, later in this topic.
-
Select or clear the check box labeled Allow connections between endpoints in group.
When this check box is selected, local endpoints in the group can connect to each other through connections in Windows Azure Connect (not just through your local network).
-
Under Connect to, use the Add button to browse for and add activated Windows Azure roles.
If you have not already activated the roles that you want to connect to, see How to Activate Windows Azure Roles for Windows Azure Connect.
-
Optionally, under Connect to, use the Add button to browse for and add endpoint groups that you have already created.
-
When the lists of endpoints and roles are complete, click Create.
-
To view and modify the lists of endpoints and roles that are in a group (and select or clear the setting for interconnections), select a group and then click Edit Group.
-
To quickly view and modify the list of endpoint groups that a particular activated role has been added to, select the role and then click Edit Role Connections.
-
To move a local endpoint from one endpoint group to another, click the endpoint, click Move to Group, and then specify the group.
-
To remove a local endpoint from the endpoint group it is assigned to, which prevents it from connecting to any Windows Azure roles until it is added to a group again, click the endpoint, click Remove from Group, and then confirm your choice.
