Installing the Direct2D Debug Layer

This topic describes how to install the Direct2D debug layer on Windows 7. Starting with Windows 8, the Direct2D debug layer is included with Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8.

Requirements

The Direct2D debug layer requires the installation of Direct2D. To install Direct2D, download and install the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 7.

Installing the 32-bit Direct2D Debug Layer

To install the 32-bit Direct2D debug layer, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Direct2D Tools and Utilities page and click the Downloads tab.
  2. Click the link for the 32-bit version of the debug layer, follow the instructions, and then click Run.
  3. On the License Agreement page, follow the instructions, and then click Install.
  4. Follow the instructions. The following files are installed on your computer:

    • d2d1debug.dll (x86): %windir%\system32

    • Help (d2d1debug.chm): %programfiles%\Direct2D Debug Layer\

    • EULA (license.rtf): %programfiles%\Direct2D Debug Layer\

Installing the 64-bit Direct2D Debug Layer

To install the 64-bit Direct2D debug layer, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Direct2D Tools and Utilities page.
  2. Click the link for the 64-bit version of the debug layer, follow the instructions, and then click Run.
  3. On the License Agreement page, follow the instructions, and then click Install.
  4. Follow the instructions. When the install succeeds, it installs the following files onto the computer:

    • d2d1debug.dll (x86): %windir%\system32

    • d2d1debug.dll (x64): %windir%\syswow64

    • Help (d2d1debug.chm): %programfiles(x86)%\Direct2D Debug Layer\

    • EULA (license.rtf): %programfiles(x86)%\Direct2D Debug Layer\
