Use Parallels Desktop to install Windows 8 and Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8 on your Mac.

For a companion video to this topic, see Parallels: Using Visual Studio on OSX.

What you'll need

You'll need a few things before using Parallels Desktop to install Windows 8 and Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8 on your Mac:

  • Parallels Desktop.
  • A Windows 8 bootable DVD or a Windows 8 disk image (.iso) file. To get a Windows 8 .iso file, do one of the following:
    • If you're an MSDN subscriber, you can get a Windows 8 .iso file from MSDN Subscriber Downloads.
    • If you're not an MSDN subscriber, you can download an .iso file containing a developer evaluation version of Windows 8 from the MSDN Evaluation Center. This version does expire and you can't upgrade it.

Note  If you plan to develop apps for Windows Phone also, you will need a 64-bit (x64) version of Windows 8. Otherwise, a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit version of Windows 8 is fine.

Note  The following steps were tested using Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac.

Step 1: Install Parallels Desktop

  1. Run the ParallelsDesktop-Build_Number-.dmg package that you downloaded earlier.
  2. When the Parallels Desktop app starts, click the Install icon, as shown in the following figure.

Note  The screen shots in this topic show an English example of the UI. The actual UI that you see may differ depending on your locale.

  3. In the Software License Agreement page, click Accept.
  4. If you're prompted to authenticate with your Mac OS X account for one-time initialization, type your Mac user name and password, and click OK.
  5. When the installation is done, the Activate Parallels Desktop page appears.
  6. Click Get Trial.
  7. In the Request Trial Key page, type your user name and email address, click your country in the Country list, and click Get Trial. This activates Parallels Desktop.
  8. After you've activated Parallels Desktop, the Parallels Wizard starts installing Windows 8.

Step 2: Set up Parallels Desktop

  1. In the New Virtual Machine page, click the Install Windows or another OS from DVD or image file icon as shown in the following figure, and click Continue.

  2. In the New Installation page, in the Install from list, click Choose an image file, and browse to and select the Windows 8 disk image (.iso) file that you created earlier. Then click Continue.

    Note

If you have a Windows 8 bootable DVD, instead of clicking Choose an image file, click the DVD drive that contains your Windows 8 bootable DVD, as shown in the following figure. Then click Continue.

  3. In the Windows Product Key page, uncheck the Express installation box, and click Continue, as shown in the following figure.

  4. In the Integration with Mac page, click either the Like a Mac or Like a PC icon (if you're not sure which icon to click, click Help me choose), and click Continue.
  5. In the Name and Location page, in the Name box, type a name for the virtual machine (like "Windows 8"). In the Location box, click where the virtual machine will be stored. Then, with the Customize settings before installation box checked, click Continue. The virtual machine settings page appears.
  6. With General selected, confirm the virtual machine name, and set the number of CPUs and memory that the virtual machine will use (use at least 2 virtual CPUs and 2 GB (2048 MB) of memory; using 4 GB (4096 MB) is optimal).
  7. If you plan to develop apps for Windows Phone and you need emulator support, enable nested virtualization. If you're developing apps only for Windows 8, don't enable nested virtualization, as it noticeably decreases performance. To enable nested virtualization, click Options, and click Optimization. Next to Nested Virtualization, check the Enable box. When the Enabling nested virtualization... dialog box appears, click Yes.
  8. When you're done with virtual machine settings, close the settings page. The Virtual Machine Configuration page appears.
  9. Click Continue.

Step 3: Install Windows 8

After you click Continue from the previous step, your virtual machine starts installing Windows 8 automatically.

Step 4: Install Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8

In Windows 8, use Windows Internet Explorer to go to Developer downloads for programming Windows Store apps. In Download the tools and SDK, click Download now. Complete the installation for Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8.

Step 5: Install Parallels Tools

  1. If Windows 8 isn't already running, launch Parallels Desktop, and start your Windows 8 virtual machine by clicking Click to Start with your newly-created virtual machine already selected.
  2. If the Apple Parallels Desktop menu isn't visible, click near the top of the virtual machine window to display it.
  3. Click the Virtual Machine menu, and click Install Parallels Tools.
  4. You'll see a notification that a new drive is now available to Windows. Click this notification. (If you miss this notification, repeat the previous step to see it again.)
  5. In the dialog box that appears, click Open folder.
  6. Click Install Parallels Tools.
  7. If prompted about making changes to the computer, click Yes. This starts installing Parallels Tools.
  8. After Parallels Tools installs, click Restart (or simply wait a few minutes) to restart the virtual machine.
