Choosing your languages

For Windows 8, you can submit apps to the Windows Store in over 100 languages. We also have a multilingual toolkit that can help you write apps that support multiple languages.

We divide these languages into two groups:

  • Certification languages—the languages that we support when confirming that your app meets our certification requirements. Your app must support at least one of these languages.
  • Allowable languages—languages that we support but do not use as part of the certification process. Your app can support as many of these languages as you like, as long as it supports at least one of the certification languages.

Note   See How to manage language and region (Windows Store apps using JavaScript and HTML) to learn more about configuring languages in your apps.

Desktop applications and language selection

When you submit a desktop application to the Windows Store, you aren't required to submit an app package. As a result, there isn't an app manifest that you can use to declare the app's languages. Instead, you can select the languages for your app in the Selling Details page, which you access during the submission process. For each language that you choose, you must fill out a separate description page for your app, with the corresponding localized screen shots. Note that you can choose a language—or a language and locale—for this step, just as you would within the app manifest for a Windows Store app.
