How to: Add a Database to a Native Device Project

You can develop smart device applications that use SQL Server Mobile Edition or SQL Server Compact Edition by using the Visual Studio development environment.

For instructions about developing a SQL Server Mobile Edition or SQL Server Compact Edition application using Visual C++ for Devices, see Installing a Development Environment.

When using SQL Server Mobile Edition or SQL Server Compact Edition in your native project, installation CAB file is not automatically downloaded to the device when you deploy the project. You can add the CAB file to your project.

The following procedure has been updated for Visual Studio 2005 SP1.

The installed database varies according to which release of Visual Studio you have installed:

  • Microsoft SQL Server Mobile Edition (Visual Studio 2005)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (Visual Studio 2005 SP1)

To add the SQL Server Mobile Edition or SQL Server Compact Edition CAB file to your project

  1. Right-click the project, and on the Project shortcut menu, click Add Existing Item.

  2. Navigate to the CAB file.

    By default, the cab files are located at %Program Files%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\SQL Server\Mobile\v3.0\wce500\<device processor>\.

    -or

  3. Copy the CAB file to the smart device.

    By default, the cab files are located at %Program Files%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SmartDevices\SDK\SQL Server\Mobile\v3.0\wce500\<device processor>\.

  4. Install SQL Server Mobile Edition or SQL Server Compact Edition by running the CAB file on the device.
