How to: Install the Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime

The runtime is a prerequisite that must be installed on each end user's computer before a Visual Studio Tools for Office solution will run. The runtime must also be installed on any server where Visual Studio Tools for Office code runs. It is not necessary to install it on the development computer, because the runtime is installed automatically when you install Visual Studio Tools for Office.

NoteNote

You must be an administrator on the computer to install the Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime.

The Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime has been updated for the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (VSTO 2005 SE) release. It runs solutions created by using these versions of Visual Studio Tools for Office:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the Microsoft Office System (VSTO 2005)

  • VSTO 2005 SE

If you have already deployed VSTO 2005 solutions to end user computers, you might have to redeploy the Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime in the following scenarios:

  • You are deploying add-ins that are created by using VSTO 2005 SE. The updated runtime includes support for these add-ins.

  • A document-level customization for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 is being used with Microsoft Office Excel 2007. Excel 2003 customizations that have ListObject controls might not work correctly unless the VSTO 2005 SE version of the runtime is installed. All other Word 2003 and Excel 2003 customizations will work with Word 2007 and Excel 2007.

In some scenarios, you do not need to install Microsoft Office applications on computers that you install the Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime on. For example, you can install the runtime on a server and use the ServerDocument class to access document files. If you do need Microsoft Office applications on the computer, install them before you install the runtime. If you install Microsoft Office after installing the runtime, you must run the Setup file (VSTOR.exe) again and repair the installation.

To install the runtime

  1. Install the .NET Framework 2.0 on the end user's computer. The .NET Framework is required before you install the Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime.

  2. Run VSTOR.exe on the end user's computer.

VSTOR.exe is available as a redistributable package from the Microsoft Download Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=49612). This is the VSTO 2005 SE version of the runtime. It provides support for both VSTO 2005 and VSTO 2005 SE solutions.

If you have VSTO 2005 or one of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System products, VSTOR.exe is on the Visual Studio Tools for Office installation media. However, this is the VSTO 2005 version of the runtime. It provides support for only VSTO 2005 solutions; it cannot be used to run VSTO 2005 SE solutions.

The prerequisites for the Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime are the same as the prerequisites for the .NET Framework.

  3. If you have non-English settings for Windows, you can install the Visual Studio Tools for Office Language Pack to see Visual Studio Tools for Office runtime messages in the same language as Windows. If any end users run your solutions with non-English settings for Windows, they must have the language pack to see runtime messages in the same language as Windows. The Visual Studio Tools for Office Language Pack is available from the Microsoft Download Center (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads).
