How to: Configure Team Foundation Server Using the Basic Configuration

You can configure Visual Studio Team Foundation Server by using the basic configuration, which enables you to use SQL Server Express. 

NoteNote

If you have accessed the Team Foundation Server Configuration tool by selecting the check box at the end of the installation wizard for Team Foundation Server, you can skip the procedure for accessing the tool from the Start menu.

Required Permissions

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators security group on the server that is running Team Foundation Server. 

To access the Team Foundation Server Configuration tool from the Start menu

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010, and then click Team Foundation Administration Console.

    The Team Foundation Administration Console appears.

  2. Click Application Tier, and then click Configure Installed Features.

    The Team Foundation Server Configuration tool appears.

To configure Team Foundation Server by using the basic configuration

  1. In the Team Foundation Server Configuration tool, click Basic, and then click Start Wizard.

    The Team Foundation Server Basic Configuration wizard appears.

  2. Read the Welcome screen, and then click Next.

  3. Perform one of the following actions:

    • Click SQL Server Express to host the configuration database on an instance of SQL Server Express, and then click Next.

      SQL Server Express will be installed during configuration.

    • Click Use an existing SQL Server Instance to host the configuration database on an existing instance of SQL Server, and then click Next.

      In SQL Server Instance, type the name of the server that is running SQL Server or the named instance that will host the configuration databases, and then click Next.

      Click Test to test the connectivity to SQL Server.

  4. Review the information, and then click Next.

    The wizard validates your configuration.

  5. Click Configure.

    The wizard applies configuration settings.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Click Close.

  8. Click Close.

    The Team Foundation Administration Console appears.
