.NET Framework Class Library
TextBoxBase Class

Implements the basic functionality required by text controls.

Namespace:  System.Windows.Forms
Assembly:  System.Windows.Forms (in System.Windows.Forms.dll)
Syntax

Visual Basic (Declaration)
<DefaultBindingPropertyAttribute("Text")> _

<ComVisibleAttribute(True)> _
Public MustInherit Class TextBoxBase _
    Inherits Control
Visual Basic (Usage)
Dim instance As TextBoxBase
C#

[ClassInterfaceAttribute(ClassInterfaceType.AutoDispatch)]
[ComVisibleAttribute(true)]
public abstract class TextBoxBase : Control
Visual C++
[DefaultBindingPropertyAttribute(L"Text")]
[ClassInterfaceAttribute(ClassInterfaceType::AutoDispatch)]
[ComVisibleAttribute(true)]
public ref class TextBoxBase abstract : public Control
JScript

Remarks

This class implements the core features of text manipulation controls, such as TextBox and RichTextBox. These include text selection, Clipboard functionality, multiline text control support, and many events.

Notes to Inheritors:

You do not typically inherit from TextBoxBase. To create your own text control class, inherit from TextBox or RichTextBox.

Examples

The following code example uses TextBox, a derived class, to create a multiline TextBox control with vertical scroll bars. This example also uses the AcceptsTab, AcceptsReturn, and WordWrap properties to make the multiline text box control useful for creating text documents.

Visual Basic
Public Sub CreateMyMultilineTextBox()
    ' Create an instance of a TextBox control.
    Dim textBox1 As New TextBox()

    ' Set the Multiline property to true.
    textBox1.Multiline = True
    ' Add vertical scroll bars to the TextBox control.
    textBox1.ScrollBars = ScrollBars.Vertical
    ' Allow the RETURN key in the TextBox control.
    textBox1.AcceptsReturn = True
    ' Allow the TAB key to be entered in the TextBox control.
    textBox1.AcceptsTab = True
    ' Set WordWrap to true to allow text to wrap to the next line.
    textBox1.WordWrap = True
    ' Set the default text of the control.
    textBox1.Text = "Welcome!" & Environment.NewLine & "Second Line"
End Sub

C#
public void CreateMyMultilineTextBox()
 {
    // Create an instance of a TextBox control.
    TextBox textBox1 = new TextBox();

    // Set the Multiline property to true.
    textBox1.Multiline = true;
    // Add vertical scroll bars to the TextBox control.
    textBox1.ScrollBars = ScrollBars.Vertical;
    // Allow the RETURN key in the TextBox control.
    textBox1.AcceptsReturn = true;
    // Allow the TAB key to be entered in the TextBox control.
    textBox1.AcceptsTab = true;
    // Set WordWrap to true to allow text to wrap to the next line.
    textBox1.WordWrap = true;
    // Set the default text of the control.
    textBox1.Text = "Welcome!" + Environment.NewLine + "Second Line";
 }
Visual C++
public:
   void CreateMyMultilineTextBox()
   {
      // Create an instance of a TextBox control.
      TextBox^ textBox1 = gcnew TextBox;

      // Set the Multiline property to true.
      textBox1->Multiline = true;
      // Add vertical scroll bars to the TextBox control.
      textBox1->ScrollBars = ScrollBars::Vertical;
      // Allow the RETURN key in the TextBox control.
      textBox1->AcceptsReturn = true;
      // Allow the TAB key to be entered in the TextBox control.
      textBox1->AcceptsTab = true;
      // Set WordWrap to true to allow text to wrap to the next line.
      textBox1->WordWrap = true;
      // Set the default text of the control.
      textBox1->Text = "Welcome!" + Environment::NewLine + "Second Line";
   }
