VirtualPathUtility.GetExtension Method

Retrieves the extension of the file that is referenced in the virtual path.

Parameters

virtualPath
Type: System.String

The virtual path.

Return Value

Type: System.String
The file name extension string literal, including the period (.), a null reference (Nothing in Visual Basic), or an empty string ("").

ExceptionCondition
ArgumentException

virtualPath contains one or more characters that are not valid, as defined in InvalidPathChars.

If the virtual path that is passed into the GetExtension method is "/images/image1.gif", the returned extension is ".gif".
