InvalidComObjectException Class

The exception thrown when an invalid COM object is used.

System.Object
  System.Exception
    System.SystemException
      System.Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObjectException

Namespace:  System.Runtime.InteropServices
Assembly:  mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll)
[SerializableAttribute]
[ComVisibleAttribute(true)]
public class InvalidComObjectException : SystemException

The InvalidComObjectException type exposes the following members.

  Name Description
Public method InvalidComObjectException() Initializes an instance of the InvalidComObjectException with default properties.
Public method InvalidComObjectException(String) Initializes an instance of the InvalidComObjectException with a message.
Protected method InvalidComObjectException(SerializationInfo, StreamingContext) Initializes a new instance of the COMException class from serialization data.
Public method InvalidComObjectException(String, Exception) Initializes a new instance of the InvalidComObjectException class with a specified error message and a reference to the inner exception that is the cause of this exception.

Protected method Finalize Allows an object to try to free resources and perform other cleanup operations before it is reclaimed by garbage collection. (Inherited from Object.)
Public method GetBaseException When overridden in a derived class, returns the Exception that is the root cause of one or more subsequent exceptions. (Inherited from Exception.)
Public method GetHashCode Serves as a hash function for a particular type. (Inherited from Object.)
Public method GetObjectData When overridden in a derived class, sets the SerializationInfo with information about the exception. (Inherited from Exception.)
Public method GetType Gets the runtime type of the current instance. (Inherited from Exception.)
Protected method MemberwiseClone Creates a shallow copy of the current Object. (Inherited from Object.)
Public method ToString Creates and returns a string representation of the current exception. (Inherited from Exception.)

  Name Description
Protected event SerializeObjectState Occurs when an exception is serialized to create an exception state object that contains serialized data about the exception. (Inherited from Exception.)

An InvalidComObjectException is thrown when an invalid COM object is used. This happens when the __ComObject type is used directly, without having a backing class factory. For more information, see IsCOMObject.

InvalidComObjectException uses the HRESULT COR_E_INVALIDCOMOBJECT which has the value 0x80131527.

COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.
1, Concerning the following COM interop error :

An unhandled exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObjectException' occurred in <client application>.exe
Additional information: COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used.

The following scenario is one cause of such an error :

1.1 A COM object is created or acquired in one thread (ThreadA).

1.2 This COM object is passed as parameter to a second thread (ThreadB).

1.3 ThreadA then terminates before ThreadB is able to marshal in the COM object.

2. The following C# code demonstrates this :

        [STAThread]
        public static void ThreadA(object data)
        {
            Object newObj = Activator.CreateInstance(Type.GetTypeFromProgID("<some progID>"));
            ISomeInterface objISomeInterface = (ISomeInterface)newObj;
            Thread tB = new Thread(Threads.ThreadB);
            tB.ApartmentState = ApartmentState.STA;
            tB.Start(objISomeInterface);
             // ThreadA terminates right after starting ThreadB.
        }
        [STAThread]
        public static void ThreadB(object data)
        {
             // The InvalidComObjectException will occur on the next line.
            ISomeInterface objISomeInterface = (ISomeInterface)data;
             ...
             ...
             ...
        }

2.1 ThreadA terminates right after creating ThreadB.

2.2 When ThreadB starts, "data" (which contains the original "objISomeInterface" object from ThreadA, will fail when cast to the ISomeInterface COM interface. The error message described in point 1 will be displayed.

2.3 Via anecdotal observation, it is likely that the "objISomeInterface" RCW internally disconnects with its COM interface when it goes out of scope. Hence the error message.
