How to: Configure an Application for Secure RTP Communications

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

To secure the transmission of audio information between Speech Server and trusted SIP peers, you can configure the application to use Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) communications. To use Secure RTP for an application, you must also do the following:

  • Configure the computer running Speech Server and running the application to use a security certificate. For more information, see How to: Set Up a Certificate for Secure SIP Peer Communication.

  • Configure the trusted SIP peer to use Mutual Transport Layer Security (TLS). For more information, see How to: Configure a SIP Peer for Mutual TLS.

    Note

You cannot use Secure RTP with a SIP peer that is a Telephony Interface Manager Connector (TIMC). SIP communication provides call control functions and can be secured between Speech Server and TIMC using Mutual TLS. However, the audio communication path bypasses TIMC and is directly between Speech Server and the TIM-supported telephony board, which do not use RTP to transmit audio data.

Configuring Applications for Secure RTP Communications

To configure an application for Secure RTP communications

  2. In the console tree, expand the applicable group, and then click Applications.

  3. In the details pane, double-click the applicable application.

  4. Select Secure RTP, and then click OK.

    Note

You can configure Secure RTP for an application with a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) script. For more information, see the UseSecureRTP property in Application Class.
