You’ve done it! You’ve created an app that you want to share with someone! Or maybe you just have a draft ready and you want someone to test it.
The options for publishing depend on whether you’re publishing an app for Office or an app for SharePoint.
Publishing apps for Office
Depending on the type of app for Office you create, you have several options on where to publish it:
Publishing to the Office Store
The Office Store provides a convenient location for developers to upload new app solutions that are aimed both at consumers and businesses.
Publishing task pane and content apps to an organization app catalog
For task pane and content apps, IT departments can deploy and configure private shared folder app catalogs to provide the same Office-solution catalog experience that the Office Store provides.
Publishing task pane and content apps to a shared folder app catalog
Alternatively, in a corporate setting, IT can deploy task pane and content apps created either by in-house or third-party developers to a central shared folder, where the manifest files will be stored and managed.
Publishing mail apps to Exchange Server
Mail apps for Outlook are installed to an Exchange catalog that is available to users of the server running Exchange Server on which it resides. It enables publishing and management of corporate mail app solutions, including internally created ones and solutions that are acquired from the Office Store and licensed for corporate use.
App type | Office Store | Corporate catalog | Shared folder app catalog | Exchange Server |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Task pane app | x | x | x | |
Content app | x | x | x | |
Mail app | x | x |

Publishing apps for SharePoint
To learn how to package your app for publication using Visual Studio 2012, see How to: Package apps for SharePoint for publishing by using Visual Studio.
After you’ve finished developing your apps for SharePoint, the final step is making those apps available to users. To do this, you can publish the app to one of two places:
Office Store
Publish your app to the Office Store to make the app publically available, so that it can be acquired by users of any SharePoint deployment.
An internal corporate catalog
Publish your apps to an internal corporate catalog, hosted on your SharePoint deployment, to make them available to users with access to that SharePoint deployment.
