Installing the Component Database

Before installing the component database that the Component Designer and Target Designer tools access, you need to have either MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 installed. For information, see Installing the Database Engine.

Note   There are two types of Windows XP Embedded: full and evaluation. You cannot use evaluation tools to connect to a full version of the component database. The types of the tools and of the component database must match.

Install the appropriate database engine type for the tools type you will be using.

You cannot upgrade from an evaluation component database to a full version. You must first remove the evaluation component database, and then install the full version.

You can install the component database on the same computer that you installed your development tools on (for single-user environment) or on another computer (for team environment). For more information about single and team environments, see Installation Options.

To install the Windows XP Embedded component database

  1. Insert the Windows XP Embedded disk in the computer you want to use for your component database.

If the Windows XP Embedded start page does not display, run Setup from the root folder of the installation media.

A 25-character key that is included on the orange Product Key sticker on the back of the Windows XP Embedded media package. Do not use the Runtime Product Key. For more information, see "Licensing a Run-Time Image" in the Windows Embedded Studio Help.

Note   The Tools Product Key is not the Product ID (PID). The PID is used when contacting Microsoft Product Support Services.

At this point, you have installed the component database on your computer.

For information about how to change the component database server, see "Changing the Database Server" in the Windows Embedded Studio Help.
