TCP/IP WINS

If you include the TCP/IP component in your configuration, you can identify a WINS server address and specify a list of Domain Name Systems (DNS). DNS translates host names into Internet Protocal (IP) addresses.

You can use the Find feature to search for the TCP/IP component.

To identify the WINS address

  1. Right-click the TCP/IP component, and then click Properties.
  2. In the TCP/IP Properties dialog box, on the WINS Address tab, enter the appropriate information for the following:
    Windows Internet Name Services (WINS)
    1. Select the adapter from the target system configuration to use for TCP/IP communication.
Note   To resolve the computer names to IP addresses, the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) protocol is used in combination with name query broadcasts.
IP addresses are used for the selected network adapter only.
    2. In dotted quad format, enter the IP address for the primary WINS server.
    3. If necessary, enter the IP address for the secondary WINS server.
Enable DNS for Windows resolutionWhen selected, the system resolves the name as follows:
    • If the name is greater than 16 characters, it is sent to the DNS server for resolution.
    • If the name is less than or equal to 16 characters, it is sent to the WINS server for resolution.
    • If the WINS server cannot resolve the name, the query is forwarded to the DNS server.
Enable LMHOSTS lookupWhen selected, the system uses the translation file to translate the host name to the IP address.
Note   The translation file is located in %%SystemRoot%%\\drivers\\etc\\lmhosts.
Scope IDThe scope ID identifies information to use if a Domain Name System (DNS) server is not found for name recognition. To communicate, all computers on a TCP/IP internetwork must have the same scope identification.

If required, type the scope identification that is provided by your network administrator for your target system.

Note   Typically, the Scope ID text box is left blank.
