Creating a DFS Root

Server Appliance Kit

If you are creating a Windows Storage Server 2003 server appliance, you can improve the "out of the box" experience for your customers by creating a local Distributed File System (DFS) root that the server administrator can use to when configuring a shared directory to use the DFS sharing protocol.

To create a local DFS root

  1. Click Start, and then click Web Interface for Remote Administration.
  2. In the browser window, click the Shares tab, click Sharing Protocols, click click the DFS option button, and then under Tasks, click Properties.
  3. Click Local DFS Root.
  4. In the Root name box, type the name of the DFS root.
  5. In the Folder path box, type the full path name of the folder you want to serve as the DFS root. If the folder does not yet exist, select the Create folder check box.
  6. Click Create root.
  7. To make the local DFS root the default DFS root when creating a shared folder, click General, and then click the Publish new shares to the local DFS root option button.
