How to: Uninstall Visual Studio 

Uninstalling Visual Studio and all its components is a three step process. These steps must be followed in the order listed below to avoid unexpected behavior.

Step 1: Uninstall Components Installed with Visual Studio

Depending on the features you selected during Visual Studio setup, a number of additional components were installed to your computer. These components are:

  • MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Runtime

  • Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 64-bit Prerequisites

  • Microsoft SQL Mobile 2005 Development Tools

  • Microsoft Visual J# Redistributable Package 2.0

  • Microsoft Visual J# Language Package 2.0

  • MSXML 6.0 Parser and SDK

  • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 SP1 (Windows 2000 only)

Each of these components must be uninstalled manually.

Caution noteCaution

Other programs might also rely on these components. Removing these components could cause these other programs to behave unexpectedly.

To uninstall components installed with Visual Studio

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Locate a component from the list and select Change/Remove or Remove, and then follow the instructions for uninstalling the component.

  4. Repeat step 3 for each component in the list.

Optional Step: Uninstall Components Installed with SQL Server Express Edition

If you chose to install SQL Server Express Edition, you might want to uninstall additional components. These components are:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

  • Microsoft SQL 2005 Tools Express Edition

  • Microsoft SQL Native Client

To uninstall components installed with SQL Server Express Edition

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Locate a component from the list and select Change/Remove or Remove, and then follow the instructions for uninstalling the component.

  4. Repeat step 3 for each component in the list.

Step 2: Uninstall Visual Studio

To uninstall Visual Studio

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Select the version of Visual Studio that you want to remove and then click Change/Remove.

  4. On the Visual Studio 2005 Maintenance screen, click Next.

  5. Click Uninstall <productname> and then click Next.

Step 3: Uninstall the .NET Framework

You must uninstall Visual Studio and all related components before you can uninstall the .NET Framework components.

Caution noteCaution

If you have multiple editions of Visual Studio installed, such as Visual Basic Express Edition and Visual Studio Professional Edition, you should not uninstall the .NET Framework, The .NET Framework should only be uninstalled after all Visual Studio editions and related components have been uninstalled.

To uninstall the .NET Framework

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Select Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 and then click Change/Remove.

  4. Follow the instructions for uninstalling.

  5. If Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Language Pack is installed, repeat steps 3 and 4.
