About Validation, Extraction, and Threshold Rules

Web tests and load tests can contain rules that help you analyze the test. Both the Web Test Editor and the Load Test Editor allow you to add rules to tests. The rules perform different functions in each place but are added using the same control in the user interface.

Validation Rule

Web Test Editor

Validation rules verify that the application is functioning correctly by checking a string on a page against an expected string result.

For more information, see About Validation Rules.

Extraction Rule

Web Test Editor

Extraction rules are used when a piece of data from a specific page must be captured and used by another page.

For more information, see About Extraction Rules.

Threshold Rule

Load Test Editor

Thresholds compare a performance counter value with either a constant value or another performance counter value.

For more information, see About Threshold Rules.
