How to: Send Work Item Queries in E-Mail

Occasionally you will want to send a work item query to another team project member. You save the query to your computer and then attach the query to an e-mail message.

If you do not have e-mail access on the same computer as you have Team Explorer installed, you can save the query and transfer it to another computer to send it.

Required Permissions

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Readers group or have the View work items in this node permission set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

To save a query to send in e-mail

  1. Double-click the query that you want to send to open it.

  2. On the View menu, click Query to show the query.

  3. On the File menu, click Save <queryname> [Query] As.

  4. Under Select the query type and save location, select File.

  5. Click Browse and specify the name and location for the query file.

  6. Attach the query file to the e-mail message you want to send.

Depending on your e-mail application, you may be able to copy and paste queries directly into your e-mail message. The following procedure shows how to copy and paste a query into a Microsoft Office Outlook message.

To copy and paste a query to send in e-mail

  1. In Team Explorer, right-click the query that you want to send, and then click Copy.

  2. Open a new e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook.

  3. Paste the query into the message.

Depending on the application, you can paste queries using the previous procedure. For example, you can also copy and paste queries into Microsoft Word documents.
