There are two steps in preparing the snapshot folder for use with Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 subscribers. You must share the folder to make it accessible from a UNC path, and you must assign appropriate NTFS file system permissions. If you use the Configure Web Synchronization Wizard, both steps are performed automatically for you.

Assigning Share Permissions to the Snapshot Folder
The snapshot folder must be a shared folder so that the SQL Server Compact 3.5 Replication Provider can access it through a UNC path. When you share the folder, you add the appropriate user account and grant this account the Read share permission. The identity under which the SQL Server Compact 3.5 Replication Provider runs depends on how Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) authentication is configured. When you use Basic authentication, the logon and password are transmitted over the network. These values are not transmitted when you use Integrated Windows Authentication. |
Assigning NTFS Permissions to the Snapshot Folder
Besides assigning share permissions to the snapshot folder, you must also set the NTFS permissions to secure access. Although the snapshot folder can reside on a drive formatted with either the FAT or NTFS file system, we recommend that you use an NTFS file system because it is more secure.
