AppId (Standard 8 Module Reference)

7/8/2014

Review the applicable Embedded Core modules and any examples for the AppId setting in Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8).

This setting specifies Windows Runtime-based apps that appear as a badge on the Lock screen or that are associated with square or wide tiles on the Start screen.

Lock Screen

This setting includes a badge that specifies the application whose monochrome icon appears on the Lock screen. To use this, you must include the AppId, which is the Application User Model ID (AppUserModelID) found in the application's AUMIDs.txt file. This file is located in the app package downloaded from the OEM channel partner portal of the Windows Store.

Lock screen badges should show only toast notifications, be easy to understand, include only personally relevant information, and should stay current so users can scan the tile to get the latest information. Clicking on the badge does not activate the app.

Start Tiles

This setting specifies the AppID of the Windows Runtime-based apps that appear as square or wide tiles on the Start screen.

The AppId must be the Application User Model ID (AppUserModelID) found in the application's AUMIDs.txt file, which is located in the app package downloaded from the OEM channel partner portal of the Windows Store.

Regional Override

If you use a setting that has a path with RegionalOverride, it specifies an app that appears on the Start or Lock screens for different regions. You can use a regional override for multiple regions. For example, you could add apps that are designed for South American business travel that only appear for your users in South America. You can override apps for WideTiles, SquareTiles, and LockScreen.

The user can select a region during Windows Welcome, or you can specify a region by using UserLocale settings in International-Core. If a region is selected, the following occurs:

  • If the selected region matches a region in RegionalOverrides, then the system displays the apps from that override.
  • If the selected region does not match any of these regions, then Standard 8 displays the apps from StartTiles for WideTiles, SquareTiles, and LockScreen.

Modules

The following table shows the modules that you can apply this setting to. In Image Configuration Editor (ICE), you can follow the corresponding path to set this setting for a module.

XML Example

These examples show how to configure various Tile types.

Lock Screen

The following XML example shows how to configure the AppId for the lock screen.

<LockScreen>
    <Badge>
        <AppId>34567ChannelFabrikam.channel-DEF_012ghijk345!App</AppId>
    </Badge>
</LockScreen>

Square and SquareOrDesktop Tiles

The following XML example shows how to configure SquareTiles and SquareOrDesktopTiles.

<SquareTiles>
          <SquareOrDesktopTile1>
               <AppIdOrPath>C:\programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\desktoptile1.lnk</AppIdOrPath>
               <FirstRunTask>backgroundtask.js</FirstRunTask>
          </SquareOrDesktopTile1>
          <SquareOrDesktopTile2>
               <AppIdOrPath>67890ChannelFabrikam.channel-JKL_mnop1234789!App</AppIdOrPath>
               <FirstRunTask>Fabrikam.FirstRunTask</FirstRunTask>
