Review File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) technical documentation for Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8).
File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) enables redirection of file-level changes from a protected volume to an in-memory overlay. This provides system designers with the option of saving or discarding file-level changes in a manner that is transparent to user applications. This intrinsic feature of FBWF can also be used for starting Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) images from read-only flash media.
Note
The functionality of File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) in Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) is the same as in Windows Embedded Standard 7 and is mainly included for backward compatibility.
File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) changes the following Windows 8 settings:
- Changes the boot loader settings to ignore incorrect shutdown checks.

- Disables Prefetch.

Warning
Write filters and Windows Media Center do not operate well together as Media Center performs large amounts of disk I/O and fills the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) or FBWF cache.
You can add FBWF to your image by adding the File Based Write Filter module to your design in Image Configuration Editor (ICE) or Image Builder Wizard (IBW).
