Device Updates with WSUS

8/29/2011

You can use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 as a stand-alone update solution or integrate it into your System Center Configuration Manager 2007 installation. In either configuration, WSUS provides software updates for devices.

For general information about installing and using WSUS alone, see the WSUS Step by Step Guide on Microsoft TechNet. For information about installing and using WSUS along with Configuration Manager, see Prerequisites for Software Updates on TechNet.

Windows Embedded Operating Systems by Product Family

Because WSUS filters operating system updates by product family, you might not always have the option to select an embedded operating system when you build a software update package. In this case, select the product family the embedded operating system belongs to.

Windows 7 product family:

  • Windows 7 for Embedded Systems
  • Windows Embedded POSReady 7
  • Windows Embedded Standard 7
  • Windows Thin PC

Windows XP product family:

  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3
  • Windows Embedded Compact 7
  • Windows Embedded for Point of Service
  • Windows Embedded Handheld
  • Windows Embedded POSReady 2009
  • Windows Embedded Standard 2009
  • Windows XP Embedded
  • Windows XP for Embedded Systems

For example, if you want to update devices running Windows Embedded POSReady 7, select the updates for Windows 7 when you build the update package. When a device running Windows Embedded POSReady 7 receives the advertisement for that package, the Windows Update agent on the device matches the device’s operating system with the one available in the package and installs the updates. If a device running Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 receives the same advertisement, the Windows Update agent ignores the package because it does not apply to the device’s operating system.

Often, software updates apply to optional features or components that are not installed on specialized devices. When the Windows Update agent applies updates from the package, the agent applies updates only to features or components that are installed on the device. For example, if the Windows 7 package contains an update to the User Account Control feature, the Windows Update agent checks for that feature on the device. If the feature is not installed, the agent ignores the update for that feature.
