1. Can a user reinstall my app on multiple phones?

Applications distributed through Windows Phone Marketplace are licensed for installation on as many as five (5) phones associated with the Windows Live ID account of the purchaser.

2. How are applications promoted in the Marketplace?

Applications are promoted in different ways:

  • Panorama Icons: Applications selected for this placement will have icons prominently displayed on the Windows Phone Marketplace. Additionally, the panorama image of the application may also be selected as the background panorama for the entire Hub.

  • Featured Icons: The Windows Phone Marketplace includes featured icons that can be used to highlight selected applications.

  • Featured List: App Hub includes a list that users can select to see additional apps highlighted for promotion.

  • Mobile Operator/OEM Store: Mobile Operators and OEMs can include a Mobile Operator or OEM store. Links to the stores are available from both the Windows Phone Marketplace.

3. How are applications selected for promotion?

Our team of merchandisers selects the applications featured in the Windows Phone Marketplace. To select an app to be featured, we consider attributes such as market relevance, uniqueness, quality, cool factor, and revenue potential. We also look for applications that leverage Windows Phone features, such as the use of Live Tiles or a Windows Phone UI style. Our ultimate goal is to create a compelling and fresh consumer experience while maximizing download opportunities and revenue for our developer community.

4. Can I apply for featured placement on the Marketplace? Do I have the option of purchasing a slot?

No, at this time there is no method to pay for placement within Marketplace. Our team of merchandisers selects all apps that are featured.

5. Are certain applications more likely to be promoted than others?

Usually, the apps featured on the Windows Phone Marketplace have a broad demographic appeal. In most cases, more specialized applications will not be selected for promotion, for example, an enterprise application for the construction industry.

6. Are free applications featured on the Marketplace?

Yes. All applications are potential candidates for feature placement in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

7. How long are applications promoted on the Marketplace?

The length of time that a specific application is promoted will vary based on factors such as market, timeliness, and success of the promotion.

8. Is any additional information required for placement on the Marketplace?

No. All that is needed to be considered for on-device promotions is the information in your Windows Phone Marketplace application submission. If you are interested in having your app considered for a panorama icon promotion, be sure to include a great panorama image with your application submission.

9. Am I notified when my application is promoted on the Marketplace?

No. At the present time, we cannot notify developers of merchandising campaigns.

10. When applications are highlighted on the Marketplace, do they also remain in their standard subcategory or category listing?

Yes, applications always remain in their primary category or subcategory listing.

11. Does the online sales reporting tool separate Marketplace-generated sales from those that are generated by the standard category or subcategory listing?

No. At the present time, the online sales tool does not report sales based on click-through category location.

12. Can I exclude my application from the Marketplace at any time?

Yes, a developer may choose to un-publish their application from Windows Phone Marketplace at any time. Sign in to your account and manage the publication of your apps from your Dashboard.
