Troubleshoot territories

Territory performance seems slow.

  • Rendering large numbers of territories on the map may take several minutes. There are several things that you can do to make territory performance better.

    • Increase the amount of RAM on your computer. If you are planning to use the territory feature of MapPoint, it is recommended that you have at least one gigabyte of RAM for Windows Vista; 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM for Windows XP (256 MB is recommended).

    • Reduce the number of programs that are running.

    • If the territories you want to create already exist in another file, you can copy the territory set from one file and paste into another. Select a territory set in the Legend and overview pane, click Copy on the Edit menu, and click Paste on the Edit menu in another map.

Sometimes data I mapped previously disappears while I am trying to create territories.

  • This will occur if your territories are created on a map with data mapped using Shaded Area Maps. If you want to see the data while you create territories, change the map type to Shaded Circle or Sized Circle or Multiple Symbol.

The final order of my territories are different from what I entered.

  • MapPoint displays the territories in alphabetical order after you finish creating them.

I updated my territory definitions in my linked source file, but the changes aren't reflected in my map.

  • Remember to update the map with changes from the source file by clicking Update Now from the context menu of the territory set from the Legend and overview pane.

I created territories earlier, but they are not appearing on new maps I create.

  • Territories are saved in individual map files and are not automatically added to new maps unless you create a template that includes the territories.

    How?

Note   You can also quickly copy territory definitions from one map to another by selecting a territory set in the Legend and overview pane, clicking Copy on the Edit menu, and clicking Paste on the Edit menu in a new map.

When I try to add an area to my territory, MapPoint adds the surrounding areas that I don't want.

  • When you right-click and drag to select an area on the map, any areas within the boundaries of the selection will be added to the territory; even if the border of the selection is touching a small portion of an area. Try zooming in closer to the area you want to add or select a smaller area.

The label for the geographic area that I want to add is not displayed on the map.

  • You may be zoomed in or out too far. Zoom closer to or farther from the area you want to add or type the area into the Find box to have MapPoint display the area on the map.
