How to: Change the Default Solver

Solver Foundation 3.0

This topic describes how to change the default solver that is used in the Solver Foundation Excel add-in. For example, if you develop your own solver, you can configure the add-in to use that solver. It is not possible to use directives for a plug-in solver in the add-in, but you can use a custom solver by changing the default solver in a configuration file.

How to reference a custom solver

  1. Create a file named MicrosoftSolverFoundationForExcel.dll.config in the following location:

    \Installation path\Microsoft Solver Foundation\3.0.1.xxxx\MsfForExcel

  2. Add required information to the configuration file to reference the new solver.

    For more information about supported attributes in the configuration file, see Developing with Solver Foundation Services (SFS).

    The following example shows a configuration file that references the Gurobi solver for solving linear programming (LP) models. LP is specified for the solver capability.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <configuration>
      <configSections>
        <section name="MsfConfig"
          type=
            "Microsoft.SolverFoundation.Services.MsfConfigSection,
             Microsoft.Solver.Foundation,
             Version=3.0.1.xxxx,
             Culture=neutral,
             PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"
          allowLocation="true"
          allowDefinition="Everywhere"
          allowExeDefinition="MachineToApplication"
          restartOnExternalChanges="true"
          requirePermission="true" />
      </configSections>
      <MsfConfig>
        <MsfPluginSolvers>
          <MsfPluginSolver name="gurobi"
            capability="LP"
            assembly="GurobiPlugIn.dll"
            solverclass="SolverFoundation.Plugin.Gurobi.GurobiSolver"
            directiveclass="SolverFoundation.Plugin.Gurobi.GurobiDirective"
            parameterclass="SolverFoundation.Plugin.Gurobi.GurobiParams" />
        </MsfPluginSolvers>
      </MsfConfig>
    </configuration>
