About Screen Capture

Expression Studio 4.0

You can use Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture in Expression Encoder to record all your on-screen actions. You can capture a still image of a dialog box, or you can capture a complete motion tutorial depicting all the actions that you can perform in a particular application. In addition to capturing the action on-screen, you can simultaneously capture both the video feed from your webcam and audio from a microphone. This creates a video production that can include your screen actions, an additional video frame displaying the image captured by your webcam, and a voiceover.

The screen element that you want to capture can be either open or closed when you capture your screen. When you are done, Expression Encoder saves the captured screen as an .xesc file. You can then open that file in Expression Encoder for additional editing, whereupon you can save it in any output format that Expression Encoder supports, or integrate it into a live broadcast.

To capture a screen, use the following workflow:

  • Prepare the application or screen layout that you want to capture.

  • Start Expression Encoder Screen Capture.

  • Activate your audio source and your webcam.

  • Set your audio, webcam, and editing options.

  • Define an output folder for your capture.

  • Define the area of the screen that you want to capture.

  • Start your capture.

  • When you are finished, end your capture.

  • Preview your capture.

  • Save your capture, and then open it in any of the projects for additional editing or to encode it for distribution.

NoteNote

You are limited to a 10-minute capture if you are using a free version of Expression Encoder, or a version included with Microsoft Expression Studio Premium or Expression Studio Web.
