Troubleshooting Forefront Identity Manager Service

Troubleshooting Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) is complex. For failed requests, you can start by viewing the requests in the FIM Portal. Turning on tracing can also help you track down issues. A good source for help from the FIM team and other users is the FIM Forum.

For request-related failures, always start with the request object. You can select the failed request in the FIM Portal and review Request Status Details on the Request object and Workflow Status Details on the Workflow Instance object. These attributes contain information about all exceptions that occur while you are processing requests and workflows. For more information, see Troubleshooting FIM 2010.

Using the Event Log

To get information about events related to FIM as they occur, you can view events in the Forefront Identity Manager application log in the Event Viewer.

You can increase the amount of information that FIM stores in the application log by following these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Service.exe.config file in the installation directory.

  2. Change the value of Error to “Verbose”.

  3. Restart the FIM service.

FIM Forum

The FIM Forum is a great source for troubleshooting help from the FIM team and from other users.

Enabling Service Tracing

You can enable service tracing of FIM. For more information, see Enabling Tracing and Viewing Trace Logs. We generally do not recommend doing this unless you are specifically directed by Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS). Trace files become large quickly and can be difficult to debug.
