Searching New Content in SharePoint Server Search

Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 search can search content in repositories other than SharePoint sites by crawling or federating to new sources of content.

For crawling content, SharePoint Server search provides a connector framework that enables you to create custom indexing connectors to connect to external content so that it can be crawled by SharePoint Server search and included in the content index. To return search results for additional content that is not crawled by SharePoint Server search you can use federated search.
