Upgrading a Service

You can upgrade your service to a new version of your service using the Windows Azure Developer Portal or the Service Management API. Windows Azure provides two mechanisms for upgrading your deployed service:

  • In-place Upgrade: You can upgrade either a single role within your service, or all of the roles within your service, in-place. You can perform an in-place upgrade when there are no changes to your service model between versions. When you upgrade your service in-place, Windows Azure stops some instances of your role or roles to upgrade them, while keeping others running. See Performing In-Place Upgrades for more information.

  • VIP Swap Upgrade: You can deploy a new version of your service to the staging server, then swap that deployment with the deployment currently in production. This type of upgrade is referred to as a VIP swap (Virtual IP) swap because the address of service running on the staging slot is swapped to the address of the service running in the production slot, and vice versa. See Performing Virtual IP Swap Upgrades for more information.
