Remote Desktop Connection Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables (Compact 7)

3/12/2014

In Windows Embedded Compact, you can add support for Remote Desktop Connection to your OS so the person using the device can connect remotely to a desktop computer that is running Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, or to a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

For more information, see Remote Desktop Connection.

For more information about how to add or remove catalog items, see Design Your First OS.

  • A desktop computer that is running Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, or a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • A serial or Ethernet network connection between the Windows Embedded Compact client and the server.
  • A display screen connected to the Windows Embedded Compact powered device.
  • (Recommended) A keyboard driver, even for devices that include software-based input panels (SIPs). If the device does not have a PS2 port, use the no-operation (NOP) keyboard driver (BSP_KEYBD_NOP=1).

The following table describes the SYSGEN variables you can set to implement the specified Remote Desktop Connection functionality.

Catalog item SYSGEN variable Description Dependencies

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

SYSGEN_RDP

Base RDP functionality, including the Windows Embedded Compact Terminal Services Client (CETSC) UI, the MSTSCAX ActiveX DLL, 32-bit color, Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS), Server Authentication, Network Level Authentication (NLA), Static Virtual Channels, and Dynamic Virtual Channels (DVC).

To support CETSC UI, you must also include SYSGEN_RDP_UI.

None.

Audio Playback Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_AUDIO

Redirects audio from the server to the RDP client or from the RDP client to the server.

SYSGEN_RDP_AUDIO does not automatically bring in the Audio Compression Manager (ACM) Windows Media Audio (WMA) or MP3 audio codecs. For these, you must add SYSGEN_DSHOW_ACMWRAP. For more information, see Encoded Media Catalog Items and Sysgen Variables.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP and audio hardware.

Printer Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_PRINTER

Redirects printers from the server to the RDP client.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

Smart Card Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_SMARTCARD

Redirects smart cards from the device to the remote server, so the smart-card user can log on and use server applications.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

OS developers must add the smart card driver that is appropriate for their system, and a custom Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) that they obtain from their smart-card reader provider.

Serial and Parallel Port Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_PORT

Redirects serial and parallel ports on the device to serial and parallel ports on the remote server.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP and a serial or parallel port.

Cut/Copy/Paste Clipboard Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_CLIPBOARD

Redirects cut, copy, and paste clipboard operations from the device to the server.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

File Storage Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_DRIVE

Redirects file storage from the device to the server.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

Filtered File Storage Redirection

SYSGEN_RDP_FILTERFSD

Redirects filtered file storage from the device to the server.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

License Information

SYSGEN_RDP_LICINFO

The Terminal Services Client Access License (TS CAL) Maintenance Tool, a Control Panel item that displays and manages TS CAL tokens for devices that connect to a server that runs Terminal Services.

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.

RemoteFX

SYSGEN_RDP_REMOTEFX

Base RemoteFX functionality, including RemoteFX software and hardware-assisted decoding, for connecting to Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH) and Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH).

Requires SYSGEN_RDP.
