2.1.1.3 NetBIOS over IPX/SPX (NBIPX) Transport

Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX) is a network protocol suite provided by Novell. CIFS can use NetBIOS over IPX/SPX (NBIPX) as a transport for SMB messages.

Novell introduced an implementation of NetBIOS over IPX in 1986. Microsoft later provided its own IPX/SPX/NetBIOS-compatible transport, NWLINK (see [NWLINK]). NBIPX provides a mapping of the required NetBIOS services to IPX/SPX. The NBIPX NetBIOS session service is mapped to SPX sessions, while datagrams are sent using the connectionless IPX protocol. For more information on NWLINK and NBIPX components, see [NBF] and [NWLINK].
