Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld

7/17/2014

Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld, based on the Windows Phone 8.1 core platform, is designed for use in small industrial Point of Service (POS) devices. The platform provides a new WinRT Point of Service programming interface for modern applications to access POS peripheral devices, such as a barcode scanner and magnetic stripe reader (MSR). The programming interface provides a vendor-neutral interface for developers to access POS devices from various manufacturers from their modern applications.

For the last decade, businesses have turned to devices built with Windows Embedded Handheld platforms to improve their customers’ experiences, automate data collection, and improve workforce productivity. Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld reimagines handheld devices, encompassing a program with tight collaboration between Microsoft and pre-selected leading industry handheld device manufacturers to harness the platform’s rich, multi-touch Windows Phone 8.1 user interface and built-in security, as well as enterprise management and business productivity tools.

The Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld software development kit (SDK) is now available for download. The following sections comprise the Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld SDK documentation.
