Install Team Foundation Server

Installing on a single-server

If you want to install Team Foundation Server on a single server with reporting and a team portal, use the standard configuration, which makes installation much simpler.

With the standard configuration, you first install SQL Server and the report server, but Team Foundation Server can install SharePoint Foundation 2010 for you. New for this version of Team Foundation Server, you can use an existing installation of SharePoint Products with the standard configuration wizard. This is helpful if you want the simplicity of the standard configuration, but you’d like to use a version of SharePoint Products other than the one that ships with Team Foundation Server. If you want more control over installation options, use the advanced configuration: How to: Install Team Foundation Server Using the Advanced Configuration.

You can’t install SharePoint Foundation 2010 on Windows Server 2012. If you want to use the standard configuration on Windows Server 2012, you must skip the installation of SharePoint Foundation 2010.

TipTip

You can get step-by-step instruction for installing TFS 2012 on Windows Server 2012 with SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 by downloading,  “Installing Team Foundation Server 2012: the ultimate guide for installing TFS,” an e-book that comes in many popular file formats, including PDF, and RTF and is based on the material from this guide (Smashwords).

Step 1 Verify that the operating system and hardware meet the requirements for Team Foundation Server and all its prerequisites. New for this version of Team Foundation Server, you must use a 64-bit server if you use a server operating system. Determine the service account you will use for Team Foundation Server.

TipTip

With the standard configuration, you only need a single user account to install Team Foundation Server.

Step 2 Install SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2012. You must install all of these SQL Server features: Database Engine, Full-Text Search (called Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search in SQL Server 2012), Analysis Services, and Reporting Services (called Reporting Services – Native in SQL Server 2012).

After you install SQL Server, configure Analysis Server for automatic failover.

Step 3Run the Team Foundation Server install from the product DVD and then use the standard configuration wizard to configure your installation. This wizard installs, configures, and integrates SharePoint Foundation 2010 with Team Foundation Server. This is where you use the single user account mentioned in the tip above.
