Localizing the Sign-in Page

Dd548486.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifNote:
This topic describes functionality that will be obsolete. This functionality is provided only to support legacy applications. Live Connect incorporates features that provide equivalent functionality.

The sign-in customization process makes it easy for you to localize your sign-in page. As discussed in Customizing the Sign-in Page, each customizable element that you define in the SiteLoginUIProperties element of your XML file contains a string that matches the ID attribute of a String element. Each of these String elements resides within a Language element. When users reach your sign-in page, the Windows Live ID service detects the language that their browser is using and uses it to select the appropriate Language element from your XML file. To localize your sign-in page, you add a Language element that matches a specific language, and then you populate that node with the appropriate String elements.

The following example is an excerpt from a sign-in XML file that is configured for browsers that use English.

<siteloginuiproperties>
   <Header id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_HEADER</Header>
   <Title id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_TITLE</Title>
   <Subtitle id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_SUBTITLE</Subtitle>
   <ImageURL id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_IMAGEURL</ImageURL>
   <SSLImageURL id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_SSLIMAGEURL</SSLImageURL>
</siteloginuiproperties>
<stringtable>
   <Language langID="en">
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_HEADER">
         Sign in with your Windows Live ID
      </string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_TITLE">Windows Live ID</string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_SUBTITLE"></string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_IMAGEURL"></string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_SSLIMAGEURL"></string>
   </Language>
</stringtable>

To extend this XML to support an additional language, such as Spanish, you modify the XML file as follows.

<siteloginuiproperties>
   <Header id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_HEADER</Header>
   <Title id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_TITLE</Title>
   <Subtitle id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_SUBTITLE</Subtitle>
   <ImageURL id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_IMAGEURL</ImageURL>
   <SSLImageURL id="default">STRID_WL_DEF_SSLIMAGEURL</SSLImageURL>
</siteloginuiproperties>
<stringtable>
   <language langID="en">
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_HEADER">
         Sign in with your Windows Live ID
      </string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_TITLE">Windows Live ID</string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_SUBTITLE"></string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_IMAGEURL"></string>
      <string id="STRID_WL_DEF_SSLIMAGEURL"></string>
   </language>
   <language langid="es">
      <String id="STRID_WL_DEF_HEADER">
         Inicia sesión con tu Windows Live ID
      </String>
      <String id="STRID_WL_DEF_TITLE">Windows Live</String>
      <String id="STRID_WL_DEF_SUBTITLE"></String>
      <String id="STRID_WL_DEF_IMAGEURL"></String>
      <String id="STRID_WL_DEF_SSLIMAGEURL"></String>
    </language>
</stringtable>

Now, when a user accesses your sign-in page from a Spanish-speaking region, the Windows Live ID service can populate your sign-in page with the localized text.

Note    If a user accesses the sign-in page with a language setting that you have not defined, English text is displayed.
