Customizing a Registration Page

Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifNote:
This topic describes functionality that will be obsolete. This functionality is provided only to support legacy applications. Live Connect incorporates features that provide equivalent functionality.

[Customized registration is deprecated. New integrations of this feature are no longer supported.]

You can customize the look and feel of a registration page to match that of your site.

Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifNote:
If you decide not to customize the registration flow, users see the default registration page. For details, see Customizing the Registration Experience.

By default, you have the option to upload the registration XML file when you first create a registration flow. You can also add or update an XML file at any time.

The first time you customize your site's registration page, you download an XML template that contains all of the XML elements required to define the appearance of the page. Later, if you want to modify the elements that you have customized, you should download the XML configuration file for your site's registration page. Your site's XML file contains both the customization XML elements and other elements that the Windows Live ID service needs.

Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifNote:
When you download the configuration file, make changes only to the customization elements. The Windows Live ID service does not accept changes to other XML elements.

We recommend that you work with your site's XML configuration file and not the template file for making subsequent changes to customization elements. Your site's XML file reflects the current configuration of your site; the template contains only sample data.

Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifImportant:
After you customize your registration page, we recommend that you download your configuration file and save it in a backup location. When you upload a new configuration file, the old one is overwritten.

Follow these steps to configure the XML file for your site:

  1. Download the XML template or configuration file from the Microsoft Services Manager site.
  2. Edit the XML file to include your customization information.
  3. Upload the edited XML file to the Microsoft Services Manager site.

The following steps explain how to download the customization template or the configuration file for your site.

To download the template or configuration file

  1. Go to the Microsoft Services Manager Application site (https://msm.live.com/app) and click Sign In to sign in with your Windows Live ID.
  2. Click Customize Registration. The Customize Registration page appears.
  3. From the Select an application drop-down list, select the site for which you want to customize registration.
  4. If this is your first time customizing the registration page, click Download template. Otherwise, click Download your current configuration file.
  5. Save the XML file to your local system.

You can now customize the registration page for your site by editing the XML file.

The following instructions explain, in general terms, how to edit the XML file to customize your registration page.

To edit the XML file

  1. Locate either the template or your configuration file.
    Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifNote:
The naming convention used for this file is ApplicationName_Cobrand.xml.
  2. Use a text editor to open the XML file and edit the elements that you want to customize.
  3. Save your changes.
  4. Close the file.

For information about the XML elements that you can customize for the registration page, see Registration Page XML Reference.

After you create or modify a configuration file for your site, you must upload it to Microsoft Services Manager. Follow these instructions to upload your site's XML file.

Dd548475.note(en-us,MSDN.10).gifImportant:
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, you may have to add Microsoft Services Manager to your list of trusted sites. For details, see "A Note for Users of Internet Explorer 8" later in this topic.

To upload the configuration file

  1. Go to the Microsoft Services Manager Application site (https://msm.live.com/app) and click Sign In to sign in with your Windows Live ID.
  2. Click Customize Registration. The Customize Registration page appears.
  3. From the Select an application drop-down list, select the site for which you want to customize the registration process.
  4. Type the path to your site's XML configuration file, or click Browse to locate it.
  5. Click Upload

A message appears on the page that indicates whether your upload was successful. If your upload fails, it is typically because of an XML validation error. You can often resolve such an issue by verifying that the XML file is formatted correctly (for example, that all tags are closed properly) and then uploading the file again.

If you are using Internet Explorer 8, you may have to add Microsoft Services Manager to your list of trusted sites before you can successfully upload your customized registration XML file.

To configure Internet Explorer 8 for Microsoft Services Manager

  1. Start Internet Explorer 8.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. In the Select a zone to view or change security settings box, select Trusted sites.
  5. Click Sites.
  6. In the Add this website to the zone box, type https://msm.live.com and then click Add.
  7. Click Close, and then click OK.
