Walkthrough: Installing the Three Tiers On Two Computers

Microsoft Dynamics Nav 2009

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 introduces a new three-tier architecture that improves the security, scalability, and flexibility of Microsoft Dynamics NAV. For details, see RoleTailored Architecture. In this walkthrough, you install a new instance of Microsoft Dynamics NAV in a production environment on two computers.

Computer Description

NAVSERV

  • Server computer running Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server.

  • This is the database and server tiers.

  • This computer runs Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

NAVCLIENT

  • Client computer running the RoleTailored client.

  • This is the client tier.

  • This computer runs Windows Vista.

The key characteristic of this configuration is that the two server tiers—Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server and SQL Server—are on the same computer. If you install Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server and SQL Server on separate computers, you must set up delegation, to enable client to user the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server service's credentials while interacting with a SQL Server database. See Walkthrough: Installing the Three Tiers on Three Computers.

After completing this walkthrough, you will have a functioning three-tier installation on two computers. This installation uses the CRONUS International Ltd. demo database. This walkthrough assumes that you are running Windows Vista on the client computer, and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 on the server computer.

In this walkthrough, the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server service uses the Network Service account. This requires less configuration work than a dedicated domain user account. However, the Network Service account is less secure because it is a shared account: users who have rights to this account have rights to all services run by this account. Running the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server service under a dedicated domain user account is the more secure option, although it requires additional configuration by a domain administrator. For more information, see How To: Set Up Delegation.

This walkthrough illustrates the following tasks:

  • Installing the Microsoft Dynamics NAV database components.

  • Installing Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server.

  • Installing the RoleTailored client.

Prerequisites

To complete this walkthrough, you will need two computers configured as described in the introduction.

For information on installing Microsoft SQL Server, see Installation Considerations for Microsoft SQL Server.

For more information about configuring these computers according to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 security best practices, see the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Security Hardening Guide.

A consultant wants to install Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 to take advantage of the new three-tier architecture:

  1. He installs Microsoft Dynamics NAV database components and the sample database on the Windows Server 2008 computer where he has already installed Microsoft SQL Server (NAVSERV).

  2. He installs the middle-tier component, Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server, on the same computer.

  3. He installs the RoleTailored client on a separate Windows Vista computer (NAVCLIENT).

When you run Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Setup you see a menu of Installation Options. One of those options, the Database Components option, installs software that configures Microsoft SQL Server to work with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. This option also installs CRONUS International, Ltd., the Microsoft Dynamics NAV demo database.

To install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Database Components and the demo database

  1. Insert the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 DVD into the DVD drive of NAVSERV, the server computer where Microsoft SQL Server is already installed. The Startup screen presents a set of options grouped by category: Prepare, Install, and Join the community.

  2. Under Install, click Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

  3. On the Welcome screen, click Next.

  4. To accept the license terms, click I accept.

  5. On the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Installer page, click Choose an installation option.

  6. On the Choose an installation option page, click Database Components. The demo database is included as part of this option.

  7. On the Specify parameters page, click Install.

  8. After the installation is complete, click Close to exit Setup.

The next step is to install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server service on the same computer.

NoteNote

If you would rather configure Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server to use a domain user account, instead of the Network Service account, to access SQL Server, see the section on Configuring for a Domain User Account in Walkthrough: Installing the Three Tiers on Three Computers).

To install the NAV Server service

  1. Run Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Setup again.

You can either eject the DVD and reinsert it, or browse to Setup.exe on the DVD. When you run Setup, it presents the Maintenance page, because Microsoft Dynamics NAV software is already installed on the computer.

  2. On the Maintenance page, click Add or remove components.

  3. Click the Server option and select Run from My Computer.

  4. Click Next.

  5. On the Specify parameters page, click Install.

  6. After the installation is complete, click Close to exit Setup.

The final task is to install the RoleTailored client to a workstation computer.

To install the RoleTailored client

  1. Insert the Microsoft Dynamics NAV DVD into the DVD drive of NAVCLIENT, the Microsoft Dynamics NAV client computer running Windows Vista.

  2. Under Install, click Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

  3. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  4. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, review the software license, and then click I accept.

  5. On the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Installer page, click Choose an installation option.

  6. On the Choose an installation option page, click Client to install the RoleTailored client.

  7. On the Specify Parameters page, click RoleTailored client to configure the component.

  8. On the Installation Parameters pane, type the name of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server computer, which is NAVSERV, in the Server Name box.

    NoteNote

You can leave Server Port set to 7046.

  9. Click Apply.

  10. On the Specify parameters page, click Install to begin installing software.

  11. After the installation is complete, click Close to exit Setup.

Software installation is now complete. When you start the RoleTailored client it should connect to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server and inform you that you are connected to CRONUS International, Ltd. This the fictional company associated with the demo database.

The next steps are to upload your license, create users, and integrate them into the Microsoft Dynamics NAV security system. For information, see How to: Activate the License File and Security in the RoleTailored Environment.
