Getting Started with the Windows Live Messenger Library

The Windows Live Messenger Library is a client-side library used to build Web-based applications that integrate with Windows Live Messenger. With the Windows Live Messenger Library, developers can build presence-enabled instant messaging applications that Web site visitors can use to interact with each other and with other Windows Live Messenger client users.

The requirements for Windows Live Messenger Library usage include:

  • Each end user must have a Windows Live ID. A user does not need to be a current Windows Live Messenger user; however, a Windows Live ID is required for signing in to Messenger using the Windows Live Messenger Library. A Windows Live ID can be obtained by visiting https://login.live.com/. A Hotmail or Windows Live e-mail address is not required to obtain a Windows Live ID; any kind of e-mail address can be used.
  • End users must grant permission to each web site that hosts a client library application. When users grant permission, they have the option to let the site sign them into the Messenger experience automatically, as long as they are signed into Windows Live in the browser.

The Windows Live Messenger Library is supported in the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 (in compatibility mode)
  • Firefox 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0
  • Safari 3.0
