Select text

You can quickly select a single word, line of text, or multiple paragraphs while you work in either Design view or Code view. Keyboard shortcuts also let you select text starting from your cursor to most any other point in your web page.

You can quickly select all of the text and other content that resides between a set of tags, or also select the tags or only the tags, by using the Quick Tag Selector bar. For more information, see Quick Tag Selector.

  • In either the Design view or Code view of the web page, do one of the following:

    To select this

    Do this

    Any amount of text

    Drag over the text.

    A word

    Do one of the following.

    • Double-click the word.

    • Put your cursor next to a word and press CTRL+SHIFT+ either RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW.

    A line of text

    Point to the left of the line until the pointer changes to an arrow that points slightly right Cc295445.48330bd4-db58-44eb-bea6-533b69671e58(en-us,Expression.30).png, and then click.

    A paragraph

    In Design view, do one of the following.

    • Triple-click anywhere in the paragraph.

    • Point to the left of the paragraph until the pointer changes to an arrow that points slightly right Cc295445.48330bd4-db58-44eb-bea6-533b69671e58(en-us,Expression.30).png, and then double-click.

    Multiple paragraphs

    Point to the left of the paragraphs until the pointer changes to an arrow that points slightly right Cc295445.48330bd4-db58-44eb-bea6-533b69671e58(en-us,Expression.30).png, and then drag up or down.

    One character at a time from your cursor

    Press SHIFT+ either RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW for each character you want to select.

    One word at a time from your cursor

    Press CTRL+SHIFT+ either RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW for each word you want to select.

    From your cursor to the start or end of the line

    Press SHIFT+ either HOME or END.

    From your cursor to the start or end of the paragraph

    Press CTRL+SHIFT+ either UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW.

    From your cursor to the point directly above or below it

    Press SHIFT+ either UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW.

    From your cursor to one screen up or down

    Press SHIFT+ either PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN.
