Connect to a server with FTP

If the server that hosts your site supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP), you can publish your site to the server by using the FTP features in Microsoft Expression Web.

Expression Web supports FTP, in addition to the secure protocols FTPS and SFTP. You can choose to use either passive FTP or normal FTP. Some network configurations will work only with passive FTP mode turned on; others will work only with passive FTP mode turned off. Most network configurations will support both modes. The passive FTP mode is considered more secure.

To add a new publishing destination

  1. In Publishing view, click Add a publishing destination.

  2. In the Connection Settings dialog box, type the Name of the site.

  3. Select a Connection Type:

    • FTP

    • SFTP

    • FTPS

    • FrontPage Server Extensions

    • WebDAV

    • File System

  4. In the Location box, type the Internet address, including the protocol, of the publishing destination that you want to publish folders and files to (for example, ftp://www.example.com). Type the directory for the web root, as specified by your web hosting provider.

  5. For all connection types except File System, type the User name and Password of an account that has permission to publish to the location. You can leave the User name and Password blank if you don't want to save them with the publishing destination settings, or if you want to use Integrated Windows Authentication.

  6. For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, you can change the Maximum number of simultaneous connections. This setting can significantly reduce publishing time by transferring several files at once, instead of one at a time.

    Note

    Check with your web hosting provider before configuring this setting. Many providers limit the number of simultaneous connections. If you exceed that number, publishing speed may be reduced.

  7. For FTP, SFTP, and FTPS connections, choose whether to Use Passive FTP.

To change an existing publishing destination

  1. In Publishing view, click Publishing settings.

  2. In the Publishing tab of the Site Settings dialog box, click the publishing destination you want to change, and then click Edit.

  3. Choose new settings.

  4. Click Save.

To set FTP application options

  1. On the Tools menu, click Application Options.

  2. In the Application Options dialog box, click the FTP tab.

  3. Do any of the following:

    • To set the FTP mode to either passive FTP or normal FTP, select or clear Use Passive FTP.

    • To set a file name extension that is not already listed under Extensions to transfer as ASCII to transfer as ASCII, under New Extension, type the file name extension, and then click Add.

    • To set a file name extension to transfer as binary, make sure that the file name extension is not listed under Extensions to transfer as ASCII. To remove a file name extension from the list, under Extensions to transfer as ASCII, select the file name extension, and then click Remove.

    • To restore the default FTP settings, click Reset Defaults.

  4. Click OK.
