Expression Studio 2.0

When you install Microsoft Expression Design, you will find that the software is quick and easy to learn. To start using the application, click Start, point to All Programs, click Microsoft Expression, and then click Microsoft Expression Design 2.

Expression Design does not automatically open a new document when you start it.

To create a new document

  1. On the File menu, click New, or press CTRL+N.

Expression Design displays the New Document dialog box, in which you can specify an artboard size and document resolution.

  2. For this practice, in the Presets list, select 800 x 600. Click the Resolution field and type 96. Then click OK.

The main document window is where you create your artwork. You can draw anywhere on the artboard (the rectangular area also known as the document page) or outside of the artboard (the rest of the document window).

If you later want to scale your document and the objects in your document, on the File menu, click Document Size and then modify the Height, Width, or Resolution. To change the size of the document frame without scaling your objects, on the File menu, click Artboard Size.

You can concentrate on different areas of your document by scrolling or zooming in or out.

To scroll horizontally or vertically

  • Do one of the following:

    • Use the scroll bars along the right and bottom sides of the document window.

    • Hold down the SPACEBAR when you drag inside the document window. This lets you scroll in any direction with the Pan tool. (You can also select the Pan Cc295091.3024f965-97dd-4826-95b4-57cd6c24e34b(en-us,Expression.10).png tool in the Toolbox.)

To center the document page in the window, on the View menu, click Center View.

To zoom in or out of an area on your document

  • Do one of the following:

    • In the Toolbox, click the Zoom Cc295091.12a7b35e-40e4-46b2-9b55-f76ba1295b21(en-us,Expression.10).png tool and click or draw over an area you'd like to zoom in on. To zoom out, hold down the ALT key and click.

    • Press CTRL+EQUAL SIGN (=) to zoom in, or press CTRL+HYPHEN (-) to zoom out.

    • Set the zoom level using the Zoom Magnification slider, in the lower-left corner of the document window, by dragging the current magnification level up or to the right to increase, or down or to the left to decrease. Alternatively, you can click the current magnification value to type in your own custom value, or click the down arrow to the right of the value to display the list of magnification levels.

    • Press CTRL+1 to set the document view to Actual Size.

For more information about zooming and scrolling, see Navigate your document.

You'll use two basic panels when you create graphics in Expression Design: the Properties panel and the Layers panel. You can always open or close a panel in the Window menu. Normally, these two panels are docked on the right side of the application window. To undock a panel, click the Float/Dock button to the right of the panel's title. When a panel is floating, you can drag it anywhere on your desktop.

For more information about panels, see Adjusting your workspace.

Now that you have an overview of the Expression Design workspace and panels, you can learn how to Draw objects.
