Basic troubleshooting

If you are having a problem with Microsoft Expression Media, try some of the following troubleshooting tips to help you restore normal functionality.

Make sure that you have installed the following software:

  • The latest version of Expression Media from the Microsoft Expression .

    To check for updates, choose Welcome Screen on the Help menu. If an update is available, a link will be provided for you to download it.

  • The latest version of QuickTime from Apple's website.

  • The latest service packs and drivers for your operating system. Use the Windows Update command on the Start menu to download and install the latest updates.

You may get a Media Rendering error if you try to import a raw file into an Expression Media catalog. To resolve Media Rendering errors, do either of the following:

  • In the case of raw images, you can download a Windows Imaging Components (WIC) codec that may solve the issue. Visit the WIC download site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=110292 to obtain a WIC codec. In most cases, camera manufacturers will provide a download of the codec that is required to read raw files created with their camera.

  • Change the Preferred Engine preference in the Media Rendering dialog box. On the Edit menu, point to Preferences, and click Media Rendering. In the Media Rendering dialog box, click the Raw tab, and then change the option in the Preferred Engine dialog box. For more information about the Raw tab preferences, see Setting preferences.

If you are working with catalogs created by older versions of iView MediaPro (such as versions 1.x or 2.x) and you begin experiencing problems with Expression Media, try this:

  1. Copy all your files into a new catalog.

  2. Select all the items in the catalog and, on the Edit menu, click Select All.

  3. On the View menu, click Move to New Catalog.

    This creates a new catalog with all the media items and metadata.

  4. Save the catalog, and then test the problematic feature.

By default, Expression Media imports thumbnails that have been embedded into the file by other programs or devices. This makes Expression Media very fast when it imports media, but some embedded thumbnails may look blurry or pixilated. To improve thumbnail quality, select the item, and then, on the Action menu, click Rebuild Item.

If a single catalog is corrupted or you get an error message stating that "This action could not be completed because an error occurred when reading the catalog," complete the following steps to recover the file.

To run a self-repair on the catalog:

  1. Start Expression Media.

  2. Click Open on the File menu.

  3. Select the catalog that would not open.

  4. Press the ALTkey on the keyboard and click Open.

This will enable you to open the corrupted catalog.
