17.4 Implementation Scenarios

This section provides two scenarios that illustrate common functionality that can be implemented with the protocols included in the Windows Server Update Server Task. The protocols involved in these scenarios include the Windows Server Update Services: Client-Server Protocol, as specified in [MS-WUSP], together with other general networking protocols used in the course of standard TCP communication between the client and server. The functionality illustrated in the scenarios is as follows:

  • Windows Server 2008 operating system retrieves updates from Microsoft Public Update Server.

  • Windows Server 2008 deploys updates to Vista Client.

It should be noted that the following scenarios depict processes that occur over TCP and thus assumes various TCP acknowledgment frames throughout the conversation that are not necessarily depicted in the trace details.
