Getting Started with the Windows Live Presence API

The Windows Live Presence API is an HTTP-based API that returns a user's presence by using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or an image.

You must have the following resources to use the Windows Live Presence API:

The following browsers are supported for use with the Windows Live Presence API:

  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 6; Windows Internet Explorer 7; Windows Internet Explorer 8
  • Firefox 1.5; Firefox 2.0; Firefox 3.0 on Windows
  • Firefox 1.5, Firefox 2.0; Firefox 3.0 on Macintosh OS X

A user is required to have a Windows Live™ ID to enable sharing their presence through the Windows Live Presence API. This can be obtained by visiting the Windows Live Account page.
