How to Manage Device Groups

The RFID administrator can use device groups that contain a set of physical devices.

You can manage the set of devices together by applying properties to a device group. You can group devices of similar characteristics into a device group, such as by vendor or by location.

You can add, modify, or delete device groups that are listed under the Device Groups node of RFID Manager.

  1. In the console tree, select the Device Groups node or a device group node.

  2. On the Action menu, click New Group.

  3. In the New Group dialog box, type the device group name in the Name field and the device group description in the Description field.

    Note
You cannot create a device group called RootDeviceGroup. "RootDeviceGroup" is a built-in device group that contains all other device groups and devices.

  4. Click OK to create the device group under the selected node.

  1. In the Device Groups node, select the device group that you want to delete.

    Note
You cannot a delete a device group that has sub-device groups. You must delete the sub-device groups and then delete the device group.

  2. On the Action menu, click Delete.

    Note
You can only delete device groups, and not devices.

  1. Expand the Device Groups node, or click the Device Groups node to display available groups in the results pane, and then select the device group that you want to rename.

  2. On the Action menu, click Rename.

  3. In the Device Groups node, rename the editable device group name.

    Note
You can only rename device groups, and not devices.

You can move a device or device group into another device group by using any of the following methods:

  • Dragging the device or device group to the new location in the device group node.
  • Using the Move to Group command on the Action menu.
  • Using cut-and-paste options.
  1. In the Device Groups node, select the device or device group that you want to move.

  2. On the Action menu, click Move To Group.

  3. In the Move To Group dialog box, select the new location of the device, and then click OK.

  1. In the Device Groups node, select the device group that you want to move.

  2. On the Action menu, click Cut.

  3. In the console tree, under the Device Groups node, select the new location of the device group.

  4. On the Action menu, click Paste.
