GS and ST Segment Definition Page (EDI Properties)

The properties included in this page to define how BizTalk Server generates the GS and ST segments for an X12-encoded interchange that it sends to the party. A GS segment identifies and specifies a functional group for an X12-encoded interchange. An ST segment is the message header for an X12-encoded interchange.

The role of the party is as an interchange receiver from BizTalk; the role of BizTalk is as an interchange sender to the party.

This page of the EDI Properties dialog box is displayed by right-clicking a party in the Parties node of the BizTalk Server Administration Console, clicking EDI Properties, and then clicking GS and ST Segment Definition under the X12 Properties, Party as Interchange Receiver, and X12 Interchange Envelope Generation nodes in the console tree

In the Transaction set specific group header (GS) section, you associate values of the GS1, GS2, GS3, GS4, GS5, GS7, and GS8 data elements with values of the For ST1, Version/Release, and Target namespace data elements. When BizTalk determines that a BizTalk XML message has the values set for the For ST1, Version/Release, and Target namespace elements in a row of the grid, BizTalk will populate the GS1, GS2, GS3, GS5, GS7, and GS8 data elements in the envelope of the outgoing interchange with the values from the same row of the grid. The values of the For ST1, Version/Release, and Target namespace elements must be unique.

If a message does not have a match with the For ST1, Version/Release, and Target namespace elements in any row, BizTalk will populate the message with the values for the GS1, GS2, GS3, GS5, GS7, and GS8 elements in the default row. These values will be used even if the message does not have a match with the For ST1, Version/Release, and Target namespace elements of the default row.

If you enter a setting for any of the fields in the grid, and then delete that setting, you will have to delete the entire row or the page will fail validation.

GS6 (Group control number)

Click Edit, and then enter a value for the Group control number. BizTalk Server will set the group control number for the next interchange sent to this number, and will increment this number for each subsequent interchange. BizTalk Server will update this UI field to the next group control number that it will use in an interchange.

The default value is 1.

Optional numeric field. Minimum one character, maximum 9 characters.

Delete

Select a line and click Delete to delete that line.

Default

Select to set this line as the default of the existing rows. If there are multiple rows in the field, one row must be set as the default.

The default value is checked.

For ST1

Select a value for the Transaction set identifier code.

There are three values for HIPAA 837 interchanges: 837_D - Health Care Claim: Dental, 837_I - Health Care Claim: Institutional, and 837_P - Health Care Claim: Professional.

There is no default value.

Version/Release

Enter a value for the Version/release.

There is no default value.

Required alphanumeric field. Minimum one character, maximum 12 characters.

Target Namespace

Select a value for the Target namespace of the schema.

There is no default value.

GS1

Select a value for the Functional code or accept the default. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

By default, a value that corresponds to the value in ST1 will be entered in the GS1 field. You can select a different value.

GS2

Enter a value for the Application sender. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

There is no default value.

Required alphanumeric field. Minimum two characters, maximum 15 characters.

GS3

Enter a value for the Application receiver. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

There is no default value.

Required alphanumeric field. Minimum two characters, maximum 15 characters.

GS4

Enter the format of date values. Can be either CCYYMMDD or YYMMDD. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

The default value is CCYYMMDD.

GS5

Enter the format of time values. Can be either HHMM, HHMMSS, or HHMMSSdd. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

The default value is HHMM.

GS7

Select a value for the Responsible agency. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party and whose values for ST1, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row on the grid.

There is no default value.

GS8

Enter a value for the version/release. This value will be entered into any message that is bound for the party if the ST1 field, the version/release, and the target namespace are as shown in the same row of the grid.

There is no default value.

Optional alphanumeric field. Minimum one character, maximum 12 characters.

Apply new ID

Select to specify a value for the transaction set control number in the ST2 field.

The default value is checked.

ST2 (Transaction set control number)

Click Edit to edit the value for the Transaction set control number, and then enter a value for the number (if the Apply new ID property is selected). BizTalk Server will set the transaction set control number for the next interchange sent to this number, and will increment this number for each subsequent interchange. BizTalk Server will update this UI field to the next transaction set control number that it will use in an interchange.

This number consists of three fields: a prefix, a number, and a suffix. The number field is a required numeric field. The prefix and suffix fields are optional alphanumeric fields. The maximum length of all three fields is 9. The maximum length of the prefix and suffix fields is 8.

The default value is 1 in the number field. If this number has not been changed by clicking Apply new ID and Edit, and then entering a new number, BizTalk Server will set the transaction set control number for the next interchange sent to this party to 1, and then will increment the number for each subsequent interchange.
