Localization <SupportedCultures>

Updated: March 24, 2014

Published: April 2, 2014

The Microsoft.Advertising assemblies support localized apps. The <SupportedCultures> tag in the app’s Visual Studio .csproj file enables the localized resources of the AdControl or DrawableAd.

What is Localized in the AdControl?

  • Interaction of the ad with the end-user is consistent with the phone’s display settings.

(Note: Most ads, including test ads, do not have any user interactions.)

  • Exception messages thrown by the AdControl or DrawableAd are presented using the Display Language setting of the end-user’s phone.

Hosting App

These localized resources will be available only if the hosting app supports localized resource files. To do so, your app must include the <SupportedCultures> tag in the Project file for the app’s Visual Studio Solution. For information about how to do this for an app see How to: Build a Localized Application for Windows Phone.

The process for supporting localized resources is the same for any app, and is not specific to the Microsoft.Advertising assemblies only.

If the <SupportedCultures> tag is not included in the app that is hosting the advertising control, the localized resources of the advertising assemblies will not be available.

Enabling <SupportedCultures> does not translate or localize the advertisements. It only allows the operating system to show the advertising control in a manner specified for that locale. This is the same behavior as any other control on any Windows platform. For example, a TextBox control can be set to support a specific language that displays text from right-to-left; however, that does not mean the control translates the text.
