Extended FAT File System
Windows Mobile Not SupportedWindows Embedded CE Supported
8/28/2008

Extended file allocation table (exFAT) is a new file system that is better adapted to the growing needs of mobile personal storage. The exFAT file system not only handles large files, such as those used for media storage, it enables seamless interoperability between desktop PCs and devices such as portable media devices so that files can easily be copied between desktop and device. In addition, exFAT can be adopted with minimal effort.

The exFAT system offers the following advantages:

  • Enables the file system to handle growing capacities in media, increasing capacity to 32 GB and larger.
  • Handles more than 1000 files in a single directory.
  • Speeds up storage allocation processes.
  • Removes the previous file size limit of 4 GB.
  • Supports interoperability with future desktop OSs.
  • Provides an extensible format, including OEM-definable parameters to customize the file system for specific device characteristics.

In addition, you can choose to add transaction support to your exFAT implementation (TexFAT) to ensure transaction-safe operations. As of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and later, TexFAT can only be supported in an exFAT environment.

what is the licensing status of exFAT?

I would like to see it as an open standard, makes more people use it, and it seems promising.

What version of exfat is windows exfat      coolbiker   |   Edit   |   Show History
I thought I saw somewhere that the new beta version of ubuntu linux will be supporting exfat 3 . I'd like to think that formating my new drive with exfat will make my day a bit easier. Still like the thought wikapedia says I have more of the drive space to myself instead of sheding 10-20gbs of space to formating. If it does that xbox 360 owners would enjoy having the space on thier drive as well.

Parent Directory      Guru Hegde ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History

I have installed driver for ExFAT in my windows Xp OS.

When I was analyzing the ExFAT file system I found out that the 'dot' and 'dotdot' directory entries are not created under the subdirectory.

Now my question is how I can determine the parent directory of current directory?

PS: If this is not the right place to ask this question, please suggest me the right forum..
