This property, along with the comclassid Field, identifies to a client the COM class that can be used to handle or process items of this content class. This mechanism is similar in intent to the MAPI Forms registry, where the PR_MESSAGE_CLASS has an associated form class identifier (CLSID) that can render and process the item for the user.

The use of this property is application-specific and does not affect the operation of an Exchange store.
