Supporting New Logon Protocols

You can add new types of logon devices to Windows, such as retina or fingerprint scanners. To support a new logon device and its accompanying authentication procedure, you must provide two components:

A GINA DLL
A custom authentication package

A custom Graphical Identification and Authentication DLL, or GINA, is the component that Winlogon calls to interact with the user and to collect logon data. For more information about how to write a custom GINA, see Winlogon and GINA.

A custom authentication package analyzes the logon data and determines whether to allow the user to log on to the system. The custom GINA specifies which authentication package will process the logon data. For more information, see Creating Custom Authentication Packages.
