ITextTemplatingEngineHost Interface

The interface for the text template transformation engine host.

Namespace: Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextTemplating
Assembly: Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextTemplating (in microsoft.visualstudio.texttemplating.dll)

public interface ITextTemplatingEngineHost
public interface ITextTemplatingEngineHost
public interface ITextTemplatingEngineHost

The text template transformation process takes a text template file as the input, and produces a new text file as the output. The text template transformation engine component controls the process, and interacts with a text template transformation host and one or more text template directive processors to complete the process. For more information, see Generating Artifacts Using Text Templates.

The host is responsible for providing an environment for the engine to run in. This includes managing the engine's interaction with the file system. If the engine or a directive processor needs a file or an assembly, it can request it from the host. The host can search directories and the global assembly cache to locate files and assemblies. For more information, see Text Template Hosts.

If you want to use the text template transformation functionality from outside Visual Studio, or to integrate it into custom tools, you can write your own custom text template host. To write your own custom text template host, implement this interface.

The following example creates a custom host for the text template transformation engine. The example creates a custom host in an executable application that can be called from the command line. The application will accept a text template file as an argument, read the template, call the engine to transform the template, and display any errors that occur in the command window.

For more information, see Walkthrough: Creating a Custom Text Template Host.
